A genealogical unlocking with Gallica
The Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) provides some very interesting sites for genealogy: gallica.bnf.fr and retronews.fr. There is a high probability of finding ancestors on these sites by searching the local press or official announcements. A few years ago, I discovered a news item related to my family that I had no idea about in the local press.
Specificities of Armenian genealogy
Doing genealogy on an Armenian ancestor means coming face to face with genocide and its consequences. Genocide is not just about taking lives, but also about removing traces of the crime in order to conceal it. Armenian genealogy is confronted not only with the absence of a register, but also with many other difficulties linked to the migration of people, their settling in diasporas in many countries with different languages.
Genealogy in Marie-Galante
If Armenian genealogical research brings us face to face with the Armenian genocide of 1915, the study of genealogy in the West Indies brings us face to face with slavery. Dehumanization to transform human beings into merchandise: slave registration numbers, ancestral names forgotten, replaced by names given by masters, unique names with no possible lineage through the father. Genealogical research through mothers is key, as it was the only person of interest in slave registers: it is through her that the possession of a newborn child was defined according to the Code Noir (French Slavery code) created by Colbert.
Armenian names
The etymology of Armenian names can provide interesting clues about the origin of a family or the identity of an ancestor.
Armenian surnames typically end with the suffix "ian" or "yan," which means "descendant of" or "son of" by extension. The prefix is often a name of Armenian, Turkish, Persian, or Arabic origin.
The root of the name is most often a first name, the father's name of the child, but it can also be a profession, a city of origin, or a physical characteristic.
About
The Chahbazian Genealogical Office was created in 2023 to help professionals and individuals who are experiencing difficulties with Armenian genealogy.
Its founder, Laurent Le Guyader Chahbazian, after 20 years of practicing genealogy out of passion and conducting research on his Armenian ancestors in France, the United States, Lebanon, and Turkey participated in the creation of the genealogical association R.I.G.A. (the International Relay of Armenian Genealogy) in 2020. This new experience, acquired alongside professional genealogist and archiving professionals and with an international network build, now allows us to best serve the clients of the Chahbazian Genealogical Office.
The office has the authorization to access the birth and marriage registers dated under 75 years old delivered by the Interministerial Service of the Archives of France and also covers genealogies in the French West Indies and France.
